Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago of primal power, archaic in its stony and icy reduction, its dimensions, and its absolute silence that leaves one speechless. Its grandeur, which has existed for what feels like an eternity, with almost no interaction with our civilization—that is the magic of the Arctic.
The photographs by Paolo Verzone, who traveled to Spitsbergen five times for this illustrated book, reveal not only the mysterious power of the "Cold Coast" but also its people, both permanent residents and visiting researchers.
Verzone shows life where none is actually possible in winter, adapted to this hostile nature, in images full of strange poetry.
"Remote, inhospitable, frozen—and yet so alive. [...] The wonderful illustrated book 'Spitsbergen' arouses curiosity about 'the warm heart of the Arctic'"

"Paolo Verzone photographs the inhabitants and landscape of Spitsbergen. He creates fascinating images. [...] They convey what awaits you in Spitsbergen if you stay longer than just for a cruise stop."
Süddeutsche Zeitung
"With his photographs, which have now been published in the illustrated book 'Spitsbergen' together with an insightful text by author Matina Wimmer by Mare Verlag, [Paolo Verzone] paints a picture of the barren landscape and its inhabitants – beyond all clichés."
