The gnome door

Clemens Haardiek

The gnome door , an enchanting Christmas tradition in Scandinavia, brings an extra dose of magic to the holidays. This miniature door, often artfully designed and lovingly decorated, is attached to a low wall or the base of a fireplace and is intended to allow the Christmas gnomes access to the house.

Elves are small, friendly creatures that play an important role in Scandinavian folklore. They are considered Santa Claus's helpers, performing good deeds and leaving small gifts and surprises during the pre-Christmas season.

The tradition of the elf door goes hand in hand with the idea that elves are especially active during the pre-Christmas season, helping people prepare for the holiday season. The elf door is therefore often decorated with tiny decorations and treats to attract the elves. You'll often find tiny chairs, tiny plates of cookies and milk, little elf houses, and many other tiny details to capture children's imaginations.

Children love tending the elf door and listening to stories about the elves. They imagine the little creatures scurrying through the door at night to hide presents or decorate the Christmas tree. The elf door fosters anticipation of Christmas and the sharing of love and kindness. Children are encouraged to do good deeds and be kind to others, because the elves are watching and reporting back to Santa.

In Scandinavia, the elf door is a heartwarming tradition that makes the holidays even more memorable. It strengthens the bond between parents and children, encourages the creativity and imagination of little ones, and creates a magical atmosphere in the run-up to Christmas.

When the elf door is in the house, Christmas feels even more magical, and the anticipation of the visit from Santa Claus and his helpers grows day by day.
