Original Bjørklund from Norway
Classic cheese slicer with a varnished birchwood handle. 22 cm long.
This typical Norwegian cheese slicer is not only suitable for brown goat cheese / caramel cheese, but also for many other things in the kitchen that need to be cut into thin, even slices.
Thor Bjørklund (1889-1975) from Lillehammer discovered and patented the cheese slicer in 1925.
Gudbrandsdal Industrier AS (GIAX) now owns the Bjørklund brand and produces in Ringebu, Norway.
The cheese slicer is one of the most recognizable symbols of Norwegian ingenuity and design. Bjørklund's product range today includes cheese slicers and knives for hard and soft cheeses, as well as cutlery for salads, cakes, and fish.
Bjørklund was a carpenter. He designed the cheese slicer because of the difficulties involved in cutting neat slices of cheese with a regular knife. The products manufactured in Ringebu have become a symbol of Norwegian innovation, quality, and design. The patent for the invention was filed on February 27, 1925.
Thor Bjørklund's prototype consisted of four parts: a blade with a cutting edge, a neck, a spike, and a handle. Although the cheese slicer has evolved over the years, the production principles remain the same as in 1925. The patent was further developed, making it possible to produce cutting tools for different types of cheese.
