Look inside the book
Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) grew up as the son of a shoemaker in Odense. Poverty and loneliness shaped his childhood, and depression and other illnesses followed him into adulthood. His artistic talent was discovered at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, where he began taking singing and dancing lessons at the age of 14. The first of his fairy tale books was published in 1935, making him famous overnight. Andersen's early fairy tales were heavily influenced by folk tales. Later, Andersen created his own unique, sometimes almost colloquial fairy tale tone, which made him his country's most famous poet and one of its most translated authors. Andersen's funeral in 1875 was a state funeral in Denmark.
