Description of the 11-day trip
By Berit Liland

423 pages with numerous color photographs. Paperback. Large format 22 x 25 cm.
One or two corners slightly bumped.

This book about the journey along the spectacular Norwegian coast takes you not only through beautiful nature but also through a thousand-year-old culture, and it tells the story of Norway's history and legends. Good maps for the sections between the ports show you where you are.
From the foreword:
"The round trip with the Norwegian 'Hurtigruten' has been dubbed 'the most beautiful sea voyage in the world' by many travel companies around the world. The 11-day round trip begins and ends in Bergen – with Bryggen (the German Bridge), includes the spectacular Geirangerfjord (in the summer season), the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, the medieval city of Trondheim, the Lofoten archipelago, the Raftsund with its magical Trollfjord, the narrow Risøyrenna, the idyllic Gisund, the Arctic cities of Tromsø and Hammerfest, the golden Arctic coast of Finnmark with the North Cape plateau, and Kirkenes on the Russian border. The shipping company also offers various excursions between individual ports.
The goal of this book is to provide travelers with background information on the many visual experiences of this journey. Whether traveling in summer with its long, bright nights and the opportunity to see the midnight sun, or in winter with its dark season and its very special winter light and the flaming northern lights, the impressions are always overwhelming and captivating!
The author pursues the ambitious goal of providing detailed information about the culture and history of places and landscapes along the coast. A bay that today lies desolate and deserted may contain archaeological traces of a proud Viking past; another could have been the gathering place for thousands of fishermen a hundred years ago in pursuit of the 'silver of the sea,' herring. The Norwegian coast is long, and the stories are numerous.
The author herself served for many years as a radio officer in the Norwegian merchant fleet, crossing the world's oceans and sailing along most coasts. In doing so, she often missed background information about the country and its people, coasts, and destinations. Modern technology with the use of
GPS opens up new possibilities today. The entire voyage was logged on an electronic nautical chart, and every location along the route is marked with its GPS position.
To get the most out of this book, it is useful to bring your own GPS, but since not all passengers use this technology, an attempt has been made to indicate, with the greatest possible accuracy, the time at which each point on the coast will be passed, wherever the ship is located.
May everyone experience their own personal 'most beautiful sea voyage in the world'!"
