Above the Arctic Circle lies Norway's little Caribbean, 80 islands with white beaches and turquoise waters: the Lofoten Islands. Some of the islands are connected by bridges, others only accessible by boat, but all are shaped by the weather and the seasons. Norwegian Andrea Gjestvang photographed a year in Lofoten exclusively for mare.
Summer with its mirror-smooth sea and bright nights. Autumn with its brief bursts of leaf color. Winter with the cold bluish light of the Arctic and the glow of embers on the horizon. Spring with cod fishing and dried stockfish. And: Andrea Gjestvang portrayed the people of the archipelago. A year in Lofoten – from polar night to midnight sun, from reindeer herders to cold-water surfers.

Andrea Gjestvang , born in 1981, lives as a photographer in Oslo and Berlin. She works for various media outlets and on freelance photo projects. "I'm not a landscape photographer. But just as I portray people, I look for a mood in the landscape. I try to view it as a kind of portrait that expresses feelings in some way."

Nikolaus G e lpke , born in Zurich in 1962, is publisher of mareverlag and editor-in-chief of the magazine mare.
