Norway's Arctic North Part 1
By Rolf Stange
212 pages with more than 400 mostly full-page color photographs. Hardcover. XXL format 30 x 22 cm.
This narrative illustrated book is a journey through the seasons and landscapes of Svalbard. Based on his lecture "Norway's Arctic North," Rolf Stange takes you on a journey over 200 pages, from the polar night with its shimmering Northern Lights to summer with its eternal light, and finally to the onset of winter, which can conjure magnificent colors into the impressive landscape.
In a relaxed and personal manner, yet with his usual informative and well-founded approach, Rolf Stange guides us around the islands, from daily and cultural life in and around Longyearbyen to the most remote corners of the Svalbard archipelago, which we explore under sail in the summer. We visit the fjords from the relatively mild west coast to the icy, high Arctic northeast, repeatedly encountering fascinating Arctic wildlife, from whales and birds to polar bears and walruses.
The series "Norway's Arctic North" also includes Part 2: Aerial Arctic: Lofoten, Jan Mayen and Svalbard from the air and, new in spring 2022, Part 3: Bear Island and Jan Mayen.
This photo book is generously sized in XXL format and features a hardcover. Over 400 color photos, many of them full-page, are featured throughout, and numerous maps provide orientation.
Author Rolf Stange has traveled extensively throughout the entire Spitsbergen (Svalbard) archipelago for more than 20 years, using every conceivable method. Here, he shares his most memorable experiences with you. Despite the partially personal narrative perspective, the text is consistently informative, making the book a good introduction to the nature, landscapes, seasons, and travel options of this Arctic archipelago – an ideal gift for anyone planning a trip there, having already taken one, dreaming of one, or simply interested in Spitsbergen and the Arctic in general.
