Bear Island and Jan Mayen
By Rolf Stange
220 pages with more than 400 mostly full-page color photographs. Hardcover. XXL format 30 x 22 cm.
Based on his lecture "Bear Island and Jan Mayen," Rolf Stange recounts his travels and experiences on Bear Island and Jan Mayen in words and pictures. Above all, he uses numerous, often full-page, photographs to show the fascinating landscapes of these two remote Arctic islands. The author takes us from the wild coasts to the highest peaks—all the way to the 2,277-meter-high Beerenberg on Jan Mayen, the only volcanic island north of the Arctic Circle.
The author is a geographer. He has made Spitsbergen his second home since 1997 and knows the entire archipelago, including Bear Island, like few others. He has also visited Jan Mayen several times, not just briefly, but spent weeks there. Rolf hiked the island from the South Cape to the summit of Beerenberg, always with his eyes open and his camera at the ready. Rolf Stange's relaxed and personal narrative, yet his usual informative and well-founded approach, offers a guided tour of the islands, just as he does in a lecture.
This photo book is generously sized in XXL format and features a hardcover. Over 400 color photos, many of them full-page, are featured throughout, and numerous maps provide orientation.
Author Rolf Stange has traveled extensively throughout the entire Spitsbergen (Svalbard) archipelago for more than 20 years, using every conceivable method. Here, he shares his most memorable experiences with you. Despite the partially personal narrative perspective, the text is consistently informative, making the book a good introduction to the nature, landscapes, seasons, and travel options of this Arctic archipelago – an ideal gift for anyone planning a trip there, having already taken one, dreaming of one, or simply interested in Spitsbergen and the Arctic in general.
